FUSS (FUT) Follicular Unit Strip Surgery
Removal of a strip of hair-bearing skin
This method is also known as F.U.T. - Follicular unit Transplantation
The removal of the hair is done in the dermis of the nape of the neck (donor zone) from a strip of the scalp from which the grafts (in follicular units of 1, 2 , 3 or 4 hair) are minutely extracted with precision
In the meantime the practitioner sutures the parts where the strip has been removed.
The extracted grafts are then re-implanted in the area to be covered (receiving zone)
Advantage
This method makes it possible to implant between 1000 to 3000 grafts (2500 to 8000 hair) in one single session of 3 to 6 hours. Today, this is the recommended technique to regain a good density rapidly.
The practitioner removes from the nape of the neck (donor zone) a strip of the scalp of the size of 1 cm by 10 to 22 cm in length and hands it over to the technical assistants for the separation of the grafts into follicular units.
Step 2
In the meantime the practitioner sutures the parts where the strip has been removed.
Step 3
The technical assistants separates with the use of microscopes, the grafts in follicular units of 1, 2 , 3 or 4 hair. For example, in 2 to 3 hours, 10 technical assistants can prepare between 1500 to 2500 follicular units which will afterwards provide for 3500 to 6000 hair
Step 4
The implantation of these follicular units is then done by the surgeons and nurses on the part meant to be covered. The duration of such an operation usually lasts between 4 to 5 hours.
